Nathaniel Rateliff – In memory of loss

Sometimes music demands an environment to breath deeply in.
It can exist at any time and in any place, but there is a setting where it is most comfortable, and with 'In memory of loss' that's in darkness.
Not the Sunday morning, blinds drawn, hangover nursing, coming down darkness, but instead the late at night, end of a difficult day, reclining into the comfort of your favourite armchair darkness.
As your tired muscled ease Nathaniel Rateliff's voice and music will fill the space that the light has vacated and wrap you in a warm embrace.
Not always a comforting one, but instead an embrace of solidarity.
He whispers that life is hard, but there's always a redemptive dawn to come, a fresh start that holds an unknown promise.
We're going to make it.
It's got a bruising, but exquisite quality that feels honest to me.
Even when he breaks loose on a track like 'Shroud' the music sounds like it is still there with you.
Simplistic and heartfelt may not be what everyone is looking for, but opening yourself up to 'In memory of loss' will provide you with some soulful nourishment that you may not have realized you were in need of.
Alt-Country? Indie-Folk?
Call it what you will.
I'll call it a new old friend.
